Power Up Your EV with Solar-Powered Home Chargers

Queenslanders, congratulations on getting your hands on a brand-new electric vehicle (EV)! You've made a great decision, and now it's time for another smart move – installing a solar-powered EV charger at your home. At Gardel Electrical & Solar, we're here to help you make the most of your EV and solar power system.

Before we get into it, did you know that we have a charging station at our showroom in Yeerongpilly? Best of all, it’s free! Available Monday to Friday, 7am to 4pm.

EV Charging Station at Gardel Electrical & Solar Showroom in Brisbane

Let's have a chat about the different types of EV chargers, the speeds they can handle, and how they can be integrated with your solar power system.

Level 1 Chargers: The Easygoing Option

Level 1 chargers are your basic, no-fuss choice. They plug straight into your regular 240-volt household outlet and provide around 2-3.6 kW of power. While they won't charge your EV at lightning speed, they're perfect for overnight charging. On average, you'll get about 8-15 km of range per hour of charging. These chargers typically come with your EV, so there's no extra cost, but they might not be the quickest solution if you're always on the move.

Level 2 Chargers: The Balanced Choice

For a bit more power, consider a Level 2 charger. These chargers require a dedicated 240-volt circuit, similar to what you'd use for an electric oven or air conditioner. They deliver 3.6-22 kW of power, and you can expect 25-50 km of range per hour of charging. They're a popular choice for home charging because they're faster than Level 1 chargers but still reasonably priced. Plus, you can connect them to your solar power system, making them an eco-friendly option. The three main level 2 brands that we work with are:

  1. SolarEdge

  2. Fronius WattPilot

  3. Evnex

DC Fast Chargers: The Speed Enthusiasts' Delight

If you're in a hurry and need your EV charged pronto, DC fast chargers are the way to go. These high-powered chargers can pump out 50-350 kW of power, giving you 100-450 km of range per hour of charging. They're not typically installed at home due to the higher cost and infrastructure requirements, but they're perfect for public charging stations when you're out and about. Keep in mind that not all EVs can handle this kind of charging speed, so check your car's compatibility before you go searching for a DC fast charger.

Now that you're armed with knowledge, it's time to choose the best EV charger for your needs. Remember, at Gardel Electrical & Solar, we specialise in installing solar power systems, home batteries, and EV chargers. We're here to help you make the most of your solar power and your new EV.

By choosing a solar-powered EV charger, you're not only saving money on your electricity bill but also reducing your carbon footprint. You can cruise around sunny Queensland guilt-free, knowing that your EV is powered by the sun!

If you have any questions or want to discuss your options, feel free to get in touch with us. We'll be more than happy to help you find the perfect solar-powered solution for your electric vehicle.

Happy charging!
